severe disability premium

What is the Severe Disability Premium (SDP)? How may I earn it? How much does it pay? If you are disabled and earning benefits, you may be eligible for this premium. This Your Benefits article will walk you through everything you need to know about Severe Disability Benefit in 2022.

How much is severe disability premium?

In 2022, you may earn up to an amount of £67.30 weekly for a single person. If you are a couple, and both eligible, it goes up to £134.60 weekly. Disability premiums are amounts added to other benefits. As such, these amounts will be directly paid with those benefits.

Important
You may be in a couple, with a partner who is registered blind. In this case, you may still receive Severe Disability Premium. You will receive the single rate. This is the case even if your partner does not earn a qualifying benefit.

What is Severe Disability Premium?

As said above, Severe Disability Premium is a Severe Disability benefit that adds money to benefits you already receive. As such, you need to be receiving a qualifying benefit to receive it. Its aim is to help with the costs that might arise for people living with a disability.

What if I moved to Universal Credit (UC)?

How much is severe disability premium?

This benefit is not available in Universal Credit. It is an aid for people with low income. You may have earned one of the qualifying benefits, and then claimed Universal Credit. In this case, you are entitled to what is called transitional protection.

Universal Credit replaces most of the qualifying benefits. Additionally, you may have earned Severe Disability Premium on Housing Benefit. In this case, you will not be paid compensation payments with Universal Credit.

Who is eligible for severe disability premium?

You must be receiving an income-related benefit to qualify for this premium. On top of his, you must receive one of an additional qualifying benefit to qualify.

The income-related benefits you could receive to be eligible are:

You also need to be receiving one of the following qualifying benefits:

Single eligibility

Disclaimer
If you are single, a couple of things need to apply to your situation. You may have someone caring for you. If this is the case, they cannot get Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Element of Universal Credit. If they earn this for looking after you, you may not be eligible for Severe Disability Premium

Do you live with multiple people? You must also be the only adult in your house. However, there are exceptions. For example, you may split the bill with your flatmate. In this case, you are likely to be treated as the only adult in your household.

Severe disability premium couple eligibility

Who is eligible for severe disability premium?

If you live in a couple, the qualifications you may have to abide by are also different. For example, both you and your partner must be getting one of the following qualifying benefits:

If your partner is registered blind, the terms for qualification are different. Then, your partner does not need to earn a qualifying benefit. You will still be eligible to earn the single rate.

Someone may be caring for you. They cannot receive Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Element of Universal Credit for looking after both of you.

They may receive one of these benefits for looking after one of you. In this case, however, you will only receive the single rate. This means that Severe Disability Premium will only be paid to one of you.

You must also be the only adults in your household. Otherwise, you may not qualify for the premium. There are exceptions, however. Do not hesitate to contact our advisers if you have any questions.

Could I get another type of disability premium?

You may be eligible for more than one disability premium. If you are, you may earn more than one disability premium at a time. For adults, there are 3 types of Disability Premium:

  • Disability premium;
  • Enhanced disability premium;
  • Severe disability premium.

You may earn the disability premium by itself. However, you may also qualify for it and either the enhanced or Severe Disability Premium.

You may not receive disability premium with income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). However, you may get one of the other two premiums.

The amounts are paid directly into your account. This is likely your bank account. The amount of money you may receive is limited by the benefit cap. It is a limit on the total amount of benefits that people between 16 years old and State Pension age may get. Each of the premiums pays the following:

Amount received with each disability premium in 2022
Disability premium type Weekly amount for a single person Weekly amount for a couple
Disability premium £35.10 £50.05
Severe disability premium £67.30 £134.60
Enhanced disability premium £17.20 £24.60
Important
Unlike Severe Disability Premium, Enhanced Disability Premium can be earned at the double rate, even if only one person in the couple is eligible.

How to claim severe disability premium

Since the money from the premium is added directly to your benefit, you usually do not need to apply. However, this is not always the case. You may not receive this premium, but believe that you qualify. If so, then follow this guide.

There are many people who are eligible to receive the benefit. However, not everyone claims it. Thankfully, there is an advantage to claiming it anyway, even if you have not does so yet.

Disclaimer
Severe Disability Premium can be backdated. This is to when you first became eligible for it. This is significant if you were eligible long before you applied. In this case, you might be able to earn a large back payment.

Who do I need to contact to get Severe Disability Payment?

Severe Disability Premium is a payment that you receive on other benefits. It is an extra sum. As such, how you claim the premium depends on the benefit that you receive. Contact the office relevant to your benefit. Then, let them know that you believe that you qualify.

Once you have let the office know, you might be sent a form. Fill it out and send it back. You should then receive Severe Disability Premium on your benefit if you qualify.

For the following 3 benefits, you will need to contact Jobcentre Plus:

For these, you must contact the Jobcentre Plus office. You may do so by phone at 0800 169 0310. You may also do so by textphone at 0800 169 0314

If you receive Pension Credit, you will need to contact the Pension Service helpline. You may do so by phone at 0800 731 0469. You may also do so by textphone at 0800 169 0133

Disclaimer
Finally, you may be getting Housing Benefit. In this case, you must find your local council, and apply through there. The Gov.UK website has a local council finder tool. You will be able to find who to contact using it.

You may believe you qualify for one of the other premiums. In this case, you may apply the same way. The qualifying benefits, as well as relevant offices, are the same for all 3

What if I disagree with the decision?

You may not agree with the decision taken on your claim. In this case, a written statement of reasons is something you may ask for. It will tell you why your claim was rejected.

If you still disagree with the decision, you may ask for an appeal. This is called a mandatory reconsideration. You will typically have one month from the time that you received your decision letter.

Severe Disability Premium is not a benefit that automatically qualifies you for a mandatory reconsideration. What this means is that your appeal is not guaranteed. However, you may believe that an error was made with your decision. If this is so, be ready to defend your case.

      Hello Dean,

Typically, you will not be able to receive Severe Disability Premium if you already get Universal Credit.

      Hope this helps,
      Robin

  • Karen Williams

My husband receives enhanced PIP and I receive carers allowance but I also have recently been awarded enhanced PIP but now my husband has received a letter to apply for severe disability premium is it because I’ve received PIP or are they trying to catch us out because I also receive carers allowance

    • Robin

      Hello Karen,
It is true that typically, if you receive Carer’s Allowance, your partner will stop getting a Severe Disability Premium. However, I don’t think that you cannot earn PIP when you get Carer’s Allowance. As such, I believe that your situation enabled him to receive Severe Disability Allowance. If you were unable to receive a certain benefit, they wouldn’t ‘tempt’ you with it, but would instead contact you.

      Hope this helps,
      Robin
